How Much Does a Desk Weigh? Their Weight Compared

When it comes to moving or just rearranging your office, it can help to know how much your desk weighs.

With the absolutely huge variety of desks in the market, the weight has a huge range as well. It depends on a lot of different factors.

We’re going to talk about what impacts a desk’s weight and give you the weight of some popular desk options on the market.

Most desks weigh anywhere from 20 to 200 lbs (9 to 91kg) depending on the size, material, and how feature-rich the desk is.

For example, an IKEA Linnmon table is hollow and the entire desk packaged up is only 11 lbs. A solid wood L-shaped executive desk on the other hand could weigh up to 600 lbs!

We get deep into the weight of desks later in the article, but for your convenience, we’ve summarized the results below. Check out the weight of each of the ten desks we covered.

Let’s break down those desk weights.

Minimum Weight19 lbs
Average Weight47 lbs
Maximum Weight73 lbs

The lightest desk we covered was desk #3 which came in at 19 lbs. This was a fairly compact desk with minimal features. Just a table top with legs and a side pocket.

The heaviest desk we covered was almost four times heavier than the lightest desk coming in at 73 lbs! This desk was much heavier due to it being a larger motorized standing desk with a monitor shelf.

As you can tell, the larger and more feature rich a desk is, the heavier it will weigh. We covered standing desks, L shaped corner desks, and even glass desks.

The average desk weight came in just under 50 lbs, at 47.1 lbs to be exact. And that is how much the average desk weighs.

If you are looking for a simpler desk, then you will likely be under this range. If you like large desks with lots of features, prepare to be over this average.

Keep reading if you want to see the specific desks we covered to get this data, and how we chose them.

What Impacts Desk Weight?

1) Size

This one is pretty common sense. A large six foot long desk is probably going to weigh more than a three foot desk.

The larger you go, the higher the weight will likely be. And the smaller a desk is, the lighter it will be. Keep in mind this is just a single factor of four total.

2) Materials

There are a ton of different materials used in tables today.

Desk frames are commonly made from steel, aluminum, and wood. That is just the frame alone. Desk panels, including the table top, are commonly made from MDF or particle board, solid wood, and even glass.

Of course there is much more variety than I’ve listed here.

A steel frame desk is going to be heavier than an aluminum frame desk. It might last longer too because it’s a stronger material.

Different desks also have different material thicknesses. A one inch thick MDF table top can possibly be heavier than a thin solid wood panel.

Material and material size matters to desk weight!

3) Functionality

More functionality to a desk usually means it will weigh more.

A good example is standing desks. Those have large metal legs that contain motors and electronics all integrated.

All that hardware makes a desk so much heavier than a standard desk.

4) Storage

Desks come in all shapes and sizes. Same goes with desk storage. Any additional storage features means material was added to create that feature.

Some desks come with drawers, some come with shelves. Drawers require more material and hardware for smooth sliding. So drawers will increase the weight of a desk compared to shelves.

Shelves are usually just panels supported by the desk frame or body.

If a desk just has a table top with four legs, and no shelves or any other storage options, it’s going to be a light desk.
